On Thanksgiving Day, the 22nd of November I decided to cook my own dinner for host family & friends with one of my closest friends Lu-Wei, whose an exchange student in my city from Australia.
Neither of us had ever cooked a big meal before for a large group, let alone something like Thanksgiving dinner! The previous night my host mom had taken me to the grocery store to get everything that we needed for the next day of cooking. Both of us weren't so sure if we’d be able to find an actual turkey since it’s not very common here in Finland, and part of me didn't even want to find one because I was rather terrified to cook it. But guess what? We were in luck (if that’s what you want to call it) and we found an actual turkey bird! My only thoughts were “this will be interesting to cook” and well, that’s basically what it was. The next day on the 22nd my host family and siblings had work and school but since it was finals week Lu-Wei and I had the day off. We started off by cooking ourselves a nice breakfast of smoothies and American pancakes, and then started the cooking progress at 10:30 a.m. where we ended up spending the entire day in the kitchen until the meal was finally completed at 7:30 p.m. Throughout the day’s cooking progress we had faced many challenges and had quite the adventure. I mean, what can you expect when you place two inexperienced teenage cooks in a kitchen and say “Hey look a turkey, cook it.” But despite all of the challenges and after a lot of freaking out, and then soon following laughter…. Our dinner ended up turning out really great. We had a beautiful set table, lovely company, and great food. Overall, a success.
