Parents visit Pt. 4: Vappu // May 1st

Here in Finland they have a holiday which is celebrated on the eve and then day of May 1st which is known as Vappu. During this holiday, the entire idea is to celebrate all of those whom have once graduated from Lukio (the equivalent to high school) whether it be last year, or 50 years ago. When they graduate, they receive these white caps (pictured below) which to me look rather similar to those in the navy. Each year, on 31'st of April, starting at 6:00 p.m. everyone gathers in the center and an announcement is made that all those who have graduated can put on these caps. Then, they are to wear them throughout the evening & until the next day, until the following eve on May 1st. It's often so that the day before what we know as "May day" people are gathering with friends and family, in party's and celebrations, enjoying everyone's company.

The following day, May 1st, was spent like any other typical holiday; with great leisure. Sleeping in, sharing a buffet styled brunch with the families, enjoying the gorgeous weather. And then in the afternoon we even went on a ride in my first host dads boat, where we sailed to an island and then continued on to grab coffee at a harbor restaurant in Turku by the river. Once we returned we took turns going to sauna, got showered & freshened up then enjoyed a German themed bbq dinner. Afterwords, I had a friend come over for a bit then we went for a ride to see another friend. It was such a great way to end the evening and although relaxed, I think it was a perfect start to the new month! :)

The last few days spent with my parents were really amazing. I didn't take many extra photo's and there's not too many more stories to share, as we mainly just enjoyed each others company. Overall though, I seriously had such an incredible time during their stay here and I am so happy to have been able to share that experience with them. Thanks a ton to all of my host family's for sharing your homes with my parents, and also to my parents themselves for taking the time (&& money) to make this trip possible! I love each and every one of you. Xxx
